Abstract
KCDC has initiated the Korea Biobank Project (KBP) in 2008 to establish an biomedical resource infrastructure for the Korean biomedical research community. As part of the 3rd-phase plan for the KBP (2016-2020), we have been making efforts to build the east Asian biobank consortium. Here, we review the current progress of the China Kadoorie Biobank (CKB) to learn strength and weakness from the one of the biggest international biobank and step forward to collaborations in the field. The CKB was established to investigate the genetic and environmental causes of common chronic diseases in the Chinese population. From 2004 to 2008, over 510,000 adults were recruited from 10 regions of China, and collected extensive data from questionnaire and physical measurements, and blood samples for a long-term storage. The Korea Biobank Network(KBN) is composed of the National Biobank of Korea in Korea NIH, 17 regional biobanks located in university hospitals and 2 collaborative biobanks. During 2001-2016, the KBN has collected biological samples (blood, DNA, LCL, urine, tissue, etc.) and its related clinical and epidemiological data from population-based cohorts and disease-based patients, accounting for approximately 770,000 donors. Although the CKB differs from the KBN in sample size, collection period and system, the purpose of both biobank projects is same.
